Christians ready to help Hurricane Ivan victims in
Grenada
Grenada (MNN) -- Hurricane Ivan tops today's news.
As the storm hits the
United States, the Island nation of Grenada is reeling
from its wake.
50-thousand people are reportedly homeless, half the
population.
Operation Mobilization[1] is gearing up to help.
OM's Henry Janowski
says food and water is scarce and they need worldwide
assistance to meet
part of the need. "We definitely will not be
able to help everybody who
needs help. But, the more resources we have
the greater impact that we
can have. The whole reality is that someone's
$10 is going to help feed
somebody. Every gift is critical no matter how
small." The great part of
this investment is that it's an eternal investment.
"The reality is we
have people that are hungry and thirsty and homeless
right now. And, as
we do that in the name of Jesus, we open the door
for them to see Jesus in
action. And, the natural response to that is
why do you care?" Go to
their web site www-dot-us-dot-om-dot-org to help,
or call our resource
line.

Christians are poised to help hurricane survivors
in Ivan's aftermath.
International (MNN)--Meanwhile, Hurricane Ivan is
menacing the US Gulf
Coast. It's the third in a series of devastating
hurricanes to slam into
Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Baptist World Aid[3] , the
relief and development arm of the Baptist World Alliance,
is sending money
to Cuba, the Bahamas, Florida and other places, to
support the relief
ministries already being undertaken by believers.
Teams involved say the
crisis is a time for them to be both the hands and
feet of Christ to the
storms' survivors.

Southern Baptist help school massacre victims in Russia
Russia (MNN) -- Next, Baptists in the United States
are reaching out in
Christ's love to the victims of the Beslan, Russian
school massacre. The
Southern Baptist International Mission Board[4]
sent five-thousand
dollars from its general relief fund to help with
the burials of many of
the victims. IMB officials say the Russian Baptist
Union is distributing
the money as a way to show Christ's compassion.
Pray that this will be a
way for believers to introduce Christ to the people
of Beslan.

A family grows as they respond to God's call.
Russia (MNN)--Next, there are an estimated 700-thousand
orphans in
Russia's orphanages. Their needs are overwhelming.
The Petersons worked
with Adoption Associates[5] when they
brought three children home from
Russia. Allen Peterson says their four-year
journey was a family
calling. "We've brought these children into
our home now, and we are
teaching them about Christ and what He did for us
on the Cross. What
happens to these kids when they grow up, what they
decide to do with
themselves, I don't know. It depends on what
God puts on their heart. We
have the idea that we're holding on to them with loose
hands, they're in
God's hands, and it's our job to train them right
now." Peterson says
God worked out the details to bring their family members
together. Their
greatest hope is to see their children respond to
God's call. "If they
decide they want to go back to Russia to live, and
to spread the Gospel
there, then that's a call that they can accept and
take, and all we have
to do is find the training for them."

Despite hurricanes, an evangelistic radio ministry
in Haiti continues.
Haiti (MNN)--And, Operation: Saturation, an effort
to blanket Haiti with
the Gospel, continues to gain steam. OMS
International's[6] Howard
Young recently returned from a trip to the area.
Local leaders have
already been identified for carrying on the ministry.
"We went to Port
De Paix, which is the capital of the northwest province
and distributed
some radios there. There's a downlink on Isle de la
Tortue. We went out
there and we put a plaque out there to dedicate it."
However, OMS
reports that missionary flights have sustained losses
and expenses due to
the hurricanes that hit Florida. Those obstacles
will slow things down,
but won't force a stoppage. Young says there
is a lot to do. "We have
need for additional funds for radios. We also have
need for additional
people to pray. We need Christians that will
do warfare prayer, and will
really ask God for specific cities and towns and ministries
that will
transform Haiti."

Believers ready tons of emergency relief for hurricane-ravaged
Florida.
USA (MNN)--We begin today in Florida, where President
Bush has signed a
two-billion dollar emergency aid bill to deliver disaster
relief to areas
reeling from two hurricanes, International
Aid's[1] Myles Fish says
they've joined a growing number of faith-based humanitarian
aid groups
working to meet needs in the worst-hit areas.
"We were able to get in
there right after Hurricane Charley, and we have trucks
that are being
loaded right now to get down there that we believe
are going to be able to
get down there without being effected by Ivan."
Fish says their
response also includes mobilizing volunteers to do
clean up and
reconstruction projects. It's also an
opportunity for International Aid
to demonstrate Christ’s love to those who are in great
need. "The first
strategy is that we are always partnering with local
churches, and it's
our intent to use whatever support we have, be it
volunteers or supplies
in an effort to support that local church in their
effort to reach their
community."

Russian Christians reaching out during this time of
mourning
Russia (MNN) -- We begin today in Russia, where an
Christian groups are
rushing to the aid of the hundreds of victims of the
terrorists kidnapping
and bombing in Beslan. Slavic Gospel Association[2]
is the official
representative of the Union of Evangelical Christians
Baptists in North
America. SGA's Joel Griffith says they will
be working through one of
their churches. "This church is only located a very
short distance from
the actual school. And, there were a lot of
children from this Beslan
Baptist church that were attending this school.
And, also their Sunday
school had quite an outreach to children." Griffith
says incredible thing
about this tragic event is that the church is responding.
"Even while
they're grieving and even while they're burying their
dead, at the same
time they realize that this is an opportunity to show
the love of Christ
and the hope of the Gospel. They want to try
to help tangibly, but also
what best way can they provide spiritual comfort and
direction and the
hope of the Gospel to these people."

Leadership training for Farsi pastors underway
Middle East (MNN) -- Pastors from a country that's
hostile to the Gospel
are receiving unprecedented pastoral training from
an American evangelist.
Evangelist Sammy Tippit[3] and team members
are in the Middle East today
for two weeks of specialized training. Tippit
says many of these pastors
have never had any formal training and this initiative
will give these
pastors the tools they need to help feed their flock
and reach the lost in
these difficult areas. Video is also being shot
during the conference
that will provide similar training on Farsi satellite
television.

The compassion of Christ to be shared in West Africa.
Burkina Faso (MNN)--The ministry of Compassion
International[4] is
spreading its arms of love to one of the poorest countries
of the world.
The West African country of Burkina Faso will be the
sixth African
country, and the 23rd country worldwide to become
part of the Compassion
program. This is the second new country Compassion
had added this year,
and the expansion comes after many years of invitations
from churches in
Burkina Faso. In Africa alone, Compassion partners
with local churches to
serve more than 168-thousand poor children, providing
not only for
physical and educational needs but spiritual needs
as well. Burkina Faso
has many needs. The lack of healthcare and the overwhelming
poverty are
just two of those. President and CEO of Compassion
International, Wess
Stafford says, “Compassion works with one child at
a time to make a
difference.” Through Compassion’s work delivered
through local church
partners, children in Burkina Faso will get regular
medical and dental
care, hygiene training, supplemental nutrition, and
educational
opportunities. Pray for the great ministry opportunities
for Compassion
and the evangelical churches in Burkina Faso.

Ministry to the Romani people grows.
Bulgaria (MNN)--And, Words of Hope's Lee DeYoung says
they're broadcasting
the hope of Christ to the Romani people of Bulgaria.
They are ministering
to a migrant group of people who face mistrust and
ethnic tensions
throughout the country. However, DeYoung says
this outreach is seeing a
lot of fruit, despite the challenges.
"The programs have led directly
to some churches that have been started as a result
of that. It seems as
if Gypsy people are quite open to the Gospel. They're
often treated as
second-class citizens in places where they are." DeYoung
says they're
hoping to expand their broadcasts to the Romani as
early as this fall
because of the enthusiastic response.
"The majority population often
doesn’t view them very favorably, and when they hear
that God really loves
them, and Jesus Christ died for them, it comes as
shocking good news.
There's been encouraging response to that, and we
believe that with the
expansion of the broadcast plan, that it'll help even
more."
